Best Mobile Phones Under ₹20,000: A Practical Buying Guide
Phones under ₹20,000 are the busiest segment in India, and the differences between them are real: processor, display, camera, battery, charging speed and how long the phone will get software updates. Here is how to compare them sensibly, with current mobile deals.
Start with what you use most
No phone in this budget is best at everything. Decide your priority first: gaming and speed, camera, battery life, or clean software and long updates. Then compare only the phones that are strong where it matters to you.
Performance
Look at the processor (chipset) rather than just RAM. In this range you will commonly see MediaTek Dimensity 6000/7000-series and Qualcomm Snapdragon 4/6/7-series chips. Newer mid-range chips handle everyday use and most games comfortably; if you play demanding games, compare independent benchmark and thermal reviews for the exact model.
- RAM: 8 GB is the sweet spot for smooth multitasking; 6 GB is acceptable for light use. "Virtual RAM" is not the same as real RAM.
- Storage: 128 GB minimum. UFS 2.2 or faster storage makes apps open quicker than eMMC.
5G: check the bands
Almost every phone in this range supports 5G, but the number of supported bands varies. For Indian networks, make sure the phone supports n78 (used by both Jio and Airtel) and, for wider Jio coverage, n28. Most recent phones do, but it is worth confirming on the specification sheet.
Display
An AMOLED display with a 120 Hz refresh rate is now common under ₹20,000 and looks noticeably better and smoother than a basic LCD. Check peak brightness if you use the phone outdoors a lot.
Camera
Ignore the megapixel number on the box — a 50 MP main camera with a good, larger sensor beats a 108 MP camera with a small one. Optical image stabilisation (OIS) helps a lot in low light and for video. Extra 2 MP "macro" or "depth" cameras add little; a proper ultra-wide camera is more useful. For the camera you are considering, look at sample photos in real reviews, especially night shots.
Battery and charging
A 5,000 mAh battery (or larger) comfortably lasts a full day for most people. Fast charging of 33 W–67 W is common; check whether the charger is included in the box, as some brands sell it separately.
Software updates and support
Some brands now promise 2–4 years of Android updates and longer security patches even on affordable phones; others offer less. Longer update support keeps the phone safer and working with banking apps for longer. Also check the amount of pre-installed apps and ads, and whether there is a service centre near you.
Getting the best price
Launch offers, bank discounts and exchange bonuses can change the real price a lot. Compare the price after offers, and if you exchange an old phone, check its valuation on the store before ordering.

Frequently asked questions
Is 8 GB RAM necessary?
It is not essential, but 8 GB keeps apps in memory and makes switching between them smoother. 6 GB is fine for light use. Virtual RAM does not replace real RAM.
Which 5G bands matter in India?
n78 is used by both Jio and Airtel; n28 helps with Jio's wider 5G coverage. Most recent phones support both, but check the specifications.
Does a higher megapixel camera take better photos?
Not necessarily. Sensor size, image processing and optical stabilisation (OIS) matter more than the megapixel count.
Is the charger included in the box?
Not always. Some brands ship without a charger — check the listing before you buy.
